The Wacken neighbourhood is bounded by the Ill River to the east, Avenue Herrenschmidt to the west, Place de Bordeaux to the south, and crossed by the Aar River and the Marne-Rhine Canal. The name Wacken likely comes from ‘Wacke’, meaning cobblestone in the local dialect, since the district is located on the site of ancient Rhine riverbeds that carried pebbles, gravel, and stones for millennia.
Home to the European Institutions, the headquarters of the Grand Est Region, and Strasbourg’s major event facilities, the Wacken district began a profound transformation in 2018 that continues to shape its new identity.
Like two flagship vessels, the headquarters of Crédit Mutuel and Puma stand majestically as the new landmarks on either side of the Archipel district. The area seamlessly blends tertiary activities, residential spaces, and local businesses, bordered by two tram lines and with direct access to the motorway.
A wide range of reception spaces are on offer to cater to all needs and configurations: from the private spaces of the European Parliament made available to associations to the impressively adaptable Maillon and its 1,000 m² of limitless creativity! The nearby Rhenus Sport complex, home to the SIG Strasbourg basketball team boasts an original offer combining event spaces and sports team-building activities.
Since December 2022, the AC Hôtel by Marriott offers around 170 rooms, in addition to the 80 studios and suites of the Residence Inn by Marriott Strasbourg. The hotel also boasts a 170 m² seminar area, a restaurant, and an exclusive Sky Bar with a 360° view of the city rooftops and the cathedral.
Nearby is the iconic 245-room Hilton , featuring 16 seminar rooms that can accommodate up to 600 people in a cocktail configuration. Next door is the new Parc Expo designed by Kengo Kuma and the Palais de la Musique et des Congrès that was renovated and expanded in 2016. This exclusive event complex covering 70,000 m² is managed by Strasbourg Events.
